Decision making made easy with the Pasture Score Tool
Choosing which paddocks to renovate is one of the most critical decisions on farm. To assist with this process, we have developed our own Pasture Score Tool, available within our ForageSelect app.
This scoring tool gives an indication of pasture health and pasture performance and allows identification of under-performing paddocks and provides immediate suggestions for improvement based on real-time field observations.
How it works
The tool utilizes a 1-5 scoring system. The assessor should walk a transect of the paddock making observations based on the 1 to 5 scoring system. To ensure accuracy, the Pasture Score Tool provides images representing each number, allowing you to select the score that best matches your paddock’s current pasture quality.
- 5: Whole paddock has a dense sward of desired grass and clovers.
- 4: Paddock shows signs of low-level damage, less vigorous grass, and some weeds.
- 3: Majority of paddock has low-level damage, weeds, and less vigorous grasses.
- 2: Parts of paddock have severe damage, a lot of weeds, and bare ground.
- 1: Entire paddock severely damaged from pugging, with little or no pasture present
Results and Recommendations
To get the most accurate representation of a paddock, the tool allows you to take multiple scores, which it then uses to calculate an average score for the paddock.
Once your scoring is complete, simply select the season you intend to renovate the pasture and hit save and email results.
You will then receive an email from Cropmark Seeds with a full report including
- Your results: a summary of your field observations and paddock scores
- Recommended action: Clear, practical steps to improve or renovate your pasture based on its current condition
- Recommended product: The best cultivar suited for your situation, including precise sowing rates and tailored spraying recommendations.
